THUNDER 5 - AZZURRI 1

The VV Thunder played the last game of the first half of the season in a beautiful, sunny, and windy afternoon at Ridgvew Park against the Azzurri Nightmare team from Yuba City. It took only 20 minutes in the second half to seal the victory with four consecutive goals in this short period of time. Five different Thunder players scored in this game. We continued to celebrate Kat's birthday. Before the game, all of us sung the traditional Happy Birthday to her. Since the opponent showed up late, it seemed that we were not going to have a game. The Azzurri team showed up not only late, but also short of one player.

The VV Thunder faced an aggressive team in the first half, who dominated the actions in spite of being short of one player. The windy afternoon helped this team to attack continuously during the first half. Beanie, our goalie, was busy trying to deflect the shots, our defenders Tiger, Kat, Valerie and Ashley P were also busy trying to contain the aggressive Azzurri front line. However, near the end of the first half, Karina sent a powerful shot from a direct kick to the penalty area, then Katie really surprised the defenders by getting to the ball and pushing it softly beating the goalie for the first time. 

With the wind and the slope in our favor, the VV Thunder players took control of the game. Ashley Y was the goalie for the second half. The second goal started from midfield and 3 players participated in the first touch action. Bethany sent the ball to Katie, Katie took a cross shot to the middle where Hazel just first touched the ball to increase the score 2-0 in our favor. Our midfield line was instrumental in keeping the ball in the opponents field. Erica, Rummit, Lexi, Macy, Courtney continued to win the ball and sending passes to the front line.

It was Melinda's turn to keep pushing our team forward, in a fast run from midfield, she was able to take a strong shot from outside the penalty area that took the goalie by surprise, scoring the third goal for our team.

The only goal scored by the opponent was via a penalty kick. Ashley Y was really close to contain this shot, that was well placed to the right side of our goalie. From this point on, our team completely dominated this game. Bethany scored the fourth goal from another strong shot outside the penalty box. It was then Lexi who took the ball near the opponent's penalty area, then she passed the ball to Macy who did not have any problem adding the fifth goal for our team.

Overall, it was an easy game that added another win for our team.  The VV Thunder is still UNDEFEATED in league play.
