VV Thunder becomes the Undefeated "I" Division Champion !!! |

A well conditioned soccer field and a beautiful sunny morning served as the perfect background to witness the VV Thunder become the Undefeated Champion of the "I" Division. This game was played in our home field against the Azzurri Nightmares on Saturday, November 20, 2004 at 9:00 AM. It was Macy who initiated the soccer season scoring the equalizing goal back in September against the Sunrise Thunderstorm team. It was Macy again who closed the soccer season scoring the winning goal, after receiving a great pass across the field from Katie. The Azzurri defenders and the goalie could not block Macy's strong shot.
Beanie played goalie the first half of the game, who with a sense of anticipation was able to come out her box and frustrate the constant Azzurri attack. Beanie defended in the second half with determination. The Azzuri's team came determined to beat our team from the initial minute of the game. However, they found a solid defensive line. Ashley P continued to sweep across the Tunder's area with speed. Tiger -as her nickname indicates- played with great endurance and did not allow the ball pass through her channel. Kat was also fast in recovering the ball and fought each inch of the field with intensity. Valerie as the stopper, played another awesome game blocking and delaying the Azzurri's attack. She made sure that the ball was recovered on time for our team. Karina also contributed to defend the Thunder's area and pushed our team forward. We missed Bethany in this game.

All our players played a great game. Lexi was so happy in this game that she was observed to do some dancing moves at the middle of the field. Erica chased the opponent, fought for the ball and delayed the game in our favor. Ashley Y played a great first half at midfield, starting a combination of passes with Katie on the left channel that gave headaches to the Azzurri's defenders. Ashley Y played goalie in the second half. Melinda also played another great game and became the closed gate to the Azzurri's advances. She was relentless and played with intensity not letting the opponent organize the attack. Rummit played a great defensive game at midfield, and also ventured to push forward sending some passes to the front line. Courtney was not afraid to face taller opponents, she was able to control the ball, contributed to the attack and sent the ball to the center of the Azzurri's penalty box. Hazel's fast movement up front allowed for openings in the Azzurri's defensive line that allowed our strikers to take shots at goal.

Our team had the opportunity to increase the score from a free kick, however the Azzurri's goalie did a great dive to get the ball and prevent the goal. This came as a result of a "kick from behind" foul committed against Katie inside the Azzurri's penalty box. The referee instead of awarding a penalty kick in our favor, it only allowed for a direct kick. The call was erroneous because if he called it a "dangerous play" inside the penalty box, then an indirect kick had to be awarded and not a direct kick. The direct kick should have been a penalty kick in our favor. Katie displayed great speed and a better control of the ball as she constantly outrun her mark and took shots at goal. Katie opened the left channel and sent several passes across the field. One of her passes was received by Macy who with a first touch scored the winning goal and the last goal of the league game.
We are the UNDEFEATED CHAMPIONS of our division, with a record of seven wins, 3 ties and no losses. Now our girls are ready to go to the finals and capture the District VI Cup - "E" Division.
Great Job VV Thunder !!!
