THUNDER 2 - SIERRA GOLD CLASH 0

The VV Thunder home game of Saturday, November 06, 2004 gave another victory for our team against the Sierra Gold Clash, a team that tried to intimidate our girls with a rough style of play. Four of our players experienced the physical pounding of the opponent. This game was played at Cooper Park, on a beautiful sunny morning. The field was really wet and slippery. We celebrated Bethany's birthday. Our team dominated the whole game against an opponent that did not bring all its players.

Just at the first minute into the game, the opponent tried to score from a fast run breakaway. However, they found Beanie as a secured goalie who defended the first half of the game. The VV Thunder answered with a couple of shots that were controlled by the well positioned Clash goalie. Kat, Karina, Ashley P, Tiger and Valerie made our defensive line, blocking any scoring opportunity and making sure that the ball was played on the opponents side. Melinda, Erica, Lexi, Rummit, Beth and Ashley Y were charged with organizing and defending at midfield. Our offensive line was made of Katie, Hazel, alternating with Macy and Courtney. They created several scoring opportunities, completely dominating the game and keeping the game on the opponents field. 

The first goal came as a result of a deflection from a Clash's defender, who in her effort to clear the ball, unfortunately ended up putting the ball in her own goal. Katie received the ball from midfield from a rebound, then after a short run crossed it from outside the box toward the center of the Clash's penalty area, the defender tried to clear the slippery ball and to her surprise, scored against her own goal. The VV thunder players continued to take shots at goal with clear scoring opportunities, however, the shots were not strong enough to beat the well positioned Clash's goalie.

As a result of a foul against Courtney inside the Clash's penalty area, our team was awarded a penalty kick. Ashley Y took the opportunity to increase the score by taking a well executed penalty kick. The shot sailed at mid level near the right goal post. The goalie could not prevent this goal. In the second half, the VV Thunder players continued to press and charge forward constantly. A series of Thunder's shots were fired, however, the Clash's goalie played a great game blocking those shots. The Clash defensive line continued to play a rough game. Near the middle of the second half, a clear foul inside the Clash penalty box was overlooked by the main Referee, who chose not to follow his Assistant's call for the foul and award another penalty kick in our favor.

The whistle blew and our team conquered another victory in league play. Five wins, three ties and no losses. We are the leaders of our division. After the game, the VV Thunder players gathered at Bethany's house to celebrate her birthday. Our players enjoyed a good time jumping on the trampoline, kicking the ball on the back yard, playing a tough foosball tournament, having a nice lunch and singing and playing (violin, piano, flute) the "We Are the Champions" song.
